THE STORY BEHIND THE GEORGE NELSON¡¯S COCONUT CHAIR
George Nelson specialised in taking the everyday and creating something new and exciting. In his words, "total design is nothing more or less than a process of relating everything to everything." The idea of basing a chair on a coconut was just one of his many creative bursts of inspiration. Created in 1955, the chair is designed to resemble a one eighth piece of a coconut. But Nelson reversed the colours, opting for white on the outside and, black for the interior.
IDEAS FOR YOUR COCONUT CHAIR
With its unique, laid back style, the Coconut Chair is made for lounging. Use a couple of Coconuts in your living room, throw on some cushions and relax. Or try one in your bedroom. The inviting recline makes the perfect chair to curl up on with a good book.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
1908-1986 (United States)
American industrial designer, George Nelson was one of the founders of American modernism. He was renowned for finding inspiration in the unlikeliest places. Instead of looking for a shape that resembled a human body, Nelson introduced the idea that anything could be turned into a unique furniture design. His most famous pieces are based on coconuts and marshmallows.
"I have never met a designer who was retained to keep things the same as they were"
