DESCRIPTION

Fluid, organic and sculptural, Noguchi's Freeform Sofa and Ottoman were like nothing else that had been seen before when they were introduced in 1946. The two-piece design is reminiscent of three rounded river stones, made up of the sofa backrest, seat and ottoman. The padded, gently curved cushioning offers great comfort and is upholstered in luxury cashmere for extra softness. The solid wood legs provide an interesting contrast and are made from premium Chinese alder. Ideal for stylish lounges and living spaces, the Freeform Sofa and Ottoman are also an elegant choice for reception areas and hotel lobbies. The ottoman has a dual purpose and can be used as footrest or as a seat in its own right

The story behind the Noguchi Freeform Sofa and Ottoman

Like many of his designs, Noguchi's Freeform Sofa and Ottoman are influenced by the natural world. Noguchi calls the set 'soft rock', referring to both their inspiration and their aesthetic comfort. Noguchi was a sculptor-designer and had a strong interest in materials, shapes and how they interact with their environment. His Freeform Sofa and Ottoman embody his belief that fine art should be applied in a functional way. The unique set redefined the idea of what a traditional sofa should look like and the original 1946 editions have become highly collectible pieces.

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

ISAMU NOGUCHI

1904-1988 (United States)

With a Japanese poet for a father and Scottish-American writer for a mother, it is not surprisingly that Isamu Noguchi inherited a strong creative streak. He was a prominent Japanese American artist and architect whose career spanned six decades, from the 1920s onward. Unwilling to be labelled, Noguchi created sculptures that could be as abstract as Henri Moore's or as realistic as Da Vinci's. He used any medium he could get his hands on: stone, metal, wood, clay, bone, paper - carving, casting, cutting, pounding, or dynamiting away as each form took shape.
