The story behind the PH 4½ - 3½ Tall Floor Lamp
Poul Henningsen's celebrated PH Lamp collection started in 1924, when he designed a pendant lamp for the Paris World Exhibition. The pendant lamp won first place in the light fitting category. It also served as a prototype for the rest of '3 shade' collection, which features pendant, wall, table and floor lamps. Inspired by the desire to create an electric reproduction of the traditional gas lamps, the PH 4½ - 3½ Tall Floor Lamp has a timeless style and elegance. Its rather functional name refers to the sizes of the lamp's shade. The '4½ ' indicates the 45cm width of the top shade, while the lower shades reflect the sizes of the 3½ model.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Often said to be the first lighting architect, Danish designer, Poul Henningsen devoted much of his life to exploring the importance of light for well-being. Believing people should not be subject to the direct glare of an electrical light source, he focused on creating lamps that produced glare-free illumination. His self-titled PH series was his most famous collection and included the PH 3/2 Table Lamp, the PH Artichoke, the PH5 and PH 3½ - 2½ Floor Lamp.
