Precision craftsmanship and functional aesthetics are the hallmark of Poul Henningsen's iconic PH Snowball Lamp. An achievement of mathematical engineering, the lamp is shaped so light hits every surface of the eight-layered shade at exactly the same angle. A varying matt and gloss finish then controls the level in which light is reflected away. This provides a glare-free, even distribution of light, which softly illuminates your room. The Poul Henningsen PH Snowball lamp is a masterpiece of modern design that looks just as beautiful switched on or off. Its artistic look fits in any modern environment, be it over the dining table, sofa or simply over the kitchen counter.
THE STORY BEHIND THE HENNINGSEN SNOWBALL LAMP
Poul Henningsen designed the Snowball lamp, sometimes known as the PH Cone Lamp, in 1958. It was first exhibited together with the PH 5 and the Artichoke at the Danish Museum of Decorative Art. The Snowball lamp has eight layers held in place by three legs. A multi-tiered shade was a signature style of Henningsen's lighting designs. The top of the shades are glossy in order to create sparkling light and the undersides of the shades are matte to avoid reflections of the light source. The designer's mission was to 'work scientifically and make lighting more beautiful.' This is certainly the case with the PH Snowball Lamp.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
Often said to be the first lighting architect, Danish designer, Poul Henningsen devoted much of his life to exploring the importance of light for well-being. Believing people should not be subject to the direct glare of an electrical light source, he focused on creating lamps that produced glare-free illumination. His self-titled PH series was his most famous collection and included the PH 3/2 Table Lamp, the PH Artichoke, the PH5 and PH 3½- 2½ Floor Lamp.
