The Achille Castiglioni-inspired Viscontea Pendant Lamp is a true classic of mid-century Italian design, adding elegance and flamboyance in equal measure. Available in the classic white finish, its almost sheer shade allows light to pass through it easily, softening and warming it to create an excellent space for entertaining. Consisting of simply a central hanging cable and the iconic, sculptural shade, it is an enduring design favourite to this day.
THE STORY BEHIND THE ACHILLE CASTIGLIONI VISCONTEA PENDANT LAMP
As with so many of their designs, the design of the Viscontea came out of the Castiglionis' desire to bring a more architectural, sculptural form to the lighting medium. Their experiments with more angular, geometric frames led them to create shapes and structures that had never been seen in the home before, and would become a hallmark of their work. Even now, the Viscontea is the kind of piece that makes a statement in any setting, and despite being more than 50 years old, is a real conversation starter.
ABOUT THE DESIGNER
A.AND P. CASTIGLIONI
Achille 1918-2002 (Italy) - Pier Giacomo 1913-1968 (Italy)
Since 1940, Archille had dedicated himself to experimenting on industrial products with his brothers Livio (1911-1979) and Pier Giacomo. They focused on Urban Planning, Architecture and Design and worked towards developing a process of integral design. This meant considering how each component within the process would work in conjunction with one another, from the materials through to production.
"There has to be irony, both in design and in the objects. I see around me a professional disease of taking everything too seriously. One of my secrets is to joke all the time."
